Backcasting Digital Europe 2030: How to make a vision become reality

“Future Studies Toolbox” Workshop at the digital Innocracy conference

This “Future Studies Toolbox” acquaints its participants with a fascinating example of scenario construction. They will experience hands-on how a positive vision of the future can be used to derive successful political narratives and courses of action beginning in the present. In spring 2020, Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft brought together an interdisciplinary group of experts to outline possible future developments of Europe’s public sphere and its digital sovereignty in the project “Digital Europe 2030”. The strategic foresight methodology employed uses “backcasting” as an approach to develop possible courses of action from the present into the future, serving to inform Germany’s current Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft will present their scenarios before participants form working groups to formulate how a desirable end state can be reached. The workshop will end with a brief discussion of the political narratives that might follow from this exercise.
